Harvest mites in cats

Harvest mites can affect country-dwelling cats in particular in the later months of the summer or early autumn. It is the larvae of these mites that are parasitic, and cats normally pick them up as they pass through long grass or other dense vegetation.

The larvae attach themselves to areas where the skin is less tough, such as on the ears, paws and lower legs, where they feed and grow. Eventually they drop off and develop into adult mites that feed on rotting vegetation. Harvest mite larvae can be detected as tiny reddish-colored specks that cause inflammation, irritation and scratching. They are treated with similar preparations that are used against other types of mite.
