- Wounds
The severity of a wound varies from serious and life threatening to relatively minor. All carry the risk of infection and therefore need to be thoroughly cleaned. If there is profuse bleeding this should be dealt with first. A minor wound can be thoroughly washed with plenty of warm water containing an antiseptic solution, and a clean dressing and bandage can then be applied. If a wound is obviously deep or severe, however, it is best not to waste time trying to deal with it at home but to cover it with clean material and get immediate veterinary assistance.
Any wound, including one with stitches following an operation, can become infected. Signs of infection include heat, swelling, pain and a discharge containing pus. If this occurs, the cat should be taken to a veterinary surgeon for treatment will probably require antibiotic drugs and may need sedatives or a general anaesthetic so that the wound can be thoroughly cleaned and dressed.
